Organising Teams at Scale

Unlocking Agile Team Performance: Practical Strategies for Success

Join us for a game-changing one-day workshop designed to empower your team and drive organisational excellence. Discover the latest trends and strategies that will revolutionise your approach to team dynamics and unleash the full potential of your workforce.

The agenda for the workshop is driven by the needs of the group. We will begin by establishing the challenges to overcome for the group in attendance. We'll then follow a two-step workshop to learn and apply the most relevant ideas with practical actions that can be taken away after the session.

Part 1: Understanding the current structure

Exercise: Designed to fail

Invite delegates to imagine they have been hired by a competitor to sabotage the organisation and identify measures they would put in place to cause delays, frustration, and burnout. Next, identify which of these measures are actually happening today.

Learning: Ideas for organising teams

  • Team topologies

    • Stream-aligned teams

    • Enabling teams

    • Complicated sub-system teams

    • Platform teams

  • Minimising cognitive load

  • Dunbar law - optimum group sizes

  • Sources of delays, dependencies, and frustrations

  • Creating conditions for flow

Exercise: Review the landscape

Review the following (ideally pre-prepared)

  • The value stream from a commercial perspective

  • The org structure showing how teams are managed

  • The software architecture

As a group, many things will now be coming together and made clear. We’ll discuss the challenges identified, the ideas for organising teams, and the parts of the current structure that are helping or hindering. This lines things up for part 2: overcoming those challenges.

Part 2: Identify Opportunities to Optimise Flow

Exercise: Apply the four-team topologies

Split up into four teams, each team creates a whole new structure based on only ONE of the four team topologies. The teams then discuss the workarounds and issues they had to use to find a solution under that constraint and make a note of any useful solutions.

Exercise: Create a recipe for success

In small groups, review the outputs from all the exercises and pick one challenge, opportunity, or idea. Develop it into a practical plan for change with a clear purpose and measures of success.

Exercise: Identify a first step forward

The ideas and plans developed so far are likely to be significant in scale and scope, potentially amounting to a full re-org of 100s of people. As a way of wrapping up the workshop, we'll guide participants to pick a meaningful first step that will improve team flow - that can be actioned by the people in the workshop without the need for external permission or resources.
